Los años 2019 y 2020 fueron prolíficos en maquetas del F-14, y Academy no quería ser la excepción y lanzó a finales de 2019 este nuevo molde de F-14A que nada tiene que ver con la anterior edición de Academy de este caza. Vamos a analizar los detalles de este nuevo lanzamiento que presume de mejor precio que sus competidores directos.
The years 2019 and 2020 were prolific in F-14 models, and Academy did not want to be the exception and launched in late 2019 this new F-14A mold that has nothing to do with the previous Academy edition of this fighter. Let’s take a look at the details of this new release which boasts a better price than its direct competitors.
INSTRUCCIONES
El folleto de instrucciones, en formato librillo , está impreso a todo color en inglés y coreano. Contiene tabla de referencias de pintura para Humbrol, Gunze, Lifecolor, Vallejo, Testors, Revell y AK, lamentablemente las referencias de esta ultima marca son de los antiguos colores acrílicos, sería interesante que Academy incluyera referencias de las mas nuevas AK Real Color Aviación.
Los esquemas de montaje son muy claros y esquemáticos, remarcando en sombreado las piezas implicadas en cada paso, y eliminando detalles superfluos de la representación gráfica de las piezas. Al final se incluye un mapa de las matrices de piezas, muy útil como veremos más adelante.
Un rápido vistazo a las instrucciones de montaje revela como este kit permite mover las alas de geometría variable una vez montado, pero con el inconveniente de NO estar sincronizadas, por lo que deberemos ajustar en cada una la posición exacta, que viene facilitada por tres lengüetas que fijan las tres posiciones características de ángulo de ataque, sin embargo, los guardapolvos de goma que se encuentran en la raíz alar solo se proveen para los ángulos máximo y mínimo, por lo que tendremos que tener en cuenta este detalle si nos planteamos poner las alas en posición intermedia. Más opciones que encontramos son las toberas, que podremos poner cerradas o abiertas, y varias opciones de armamento que analizaremos más adelante.
The instruction sheet, in booklet format, is printed in full color in English and Korean. It contains a table of paint references for Humbrol, Gunze, Lifecolor, Vallejo, Testors, Revell and AK, unfortunately the references of the latter brand are of the old acrylic colors, it would be interesting if Academy included references of the newest AK Real Color Aviation.
The assembly diagrams are very clear and schematic, highlighting in shading the pieces involved in each step, and eliminating superfluous details from the graphic representation of the pieces. At the end a map of the pieces’ trees is included, very useful as we will see later.
A quick glance at the assembly instructions reveals how this kit allows to move the variable geometry wings once assembled, but with the inconvenience of NOT being synchronized, so we must adjust in each one the exact position, which is provided by three tabs that fix the three characteristic positions of the angle of attack, however, the rubber gowns that are in the wing root are only provided for the maximum and minimum angles, so we will have to take into account this detail if we consider putting the wings in intermediate position. More options that we find are the nozzles, which we can put closed or open, and several options of armament that we will analyze later.
DECORACIONES Y CALCAS
Este apartado quizás sea el más flojo de esta maqueta, no por la calidad de las calcas en sí, impresas por Cartograph, sino porque solo se ofrece una opción de decoración, pero es razonable debido al costo inferior de la maqueta. La abrumadora variedad de decoraciones que existen en el mercado para este avión no deben ser un problema a la hora de decidirnos por este modelo.
La unidad de la US NAVY representada en este kit es:
- F-14A número 100 del VF-143 `Pukin´ Dogs embarcado en el USS America, 1976
Como curiosidad se incluyen calcas para representar las marcas de la zona batida por el repliegue de las alas de geometría variable.
This section is perhaps the weakest of this model, not because of the quality of the decals themselves, printed by Cartograph, but because it only offers a decoration option, but it is reasonable due to the lower cost of the model. The overwhelming variety of decorations that exist in the market for this plane should not be a problem when deciding on this model.

As a curiosity, decals are included to represent the marks of the zone beaten by the folding of the wings of variable geometry.
PIEZAS
Las grapas de piezas vienen en el clásico plástico gris claro de Academy, blando y agradecido para limar y trabajar. El panelado es negativo y viene remachada en su mayor parte, si bien este remachado no es tan riguroso en ubicación y número como el que vemos en las maquetas de GWH o Finemolds.
Antes mencionábamos que es útil el mapa de piezas de este kit, y esto se debe a que sorprendentemente Academy ha incluido piezas para representar CUALQUIER VERSIÓN DE F-14, esto es significativo sobre todo con el precio inferior que tiene esta maqueta respecto a sus rivales como GWH, Hasegawa o Finemolds, así pues, encontramos piezas con las alternativas necesarias para montar cada versión, tal es el caso del pod electrónico bajo el morro, diferente en cada variante; o las rejillas de admisión y protuberancias en la zona donde se aloja el cañón Vulcan, incluso encontramos dos juegos de derivas, para las versiones F-14A/B y F-14D.
Los componentes del tren de aterrizaje viene bien representados para la escala, aunque los pozos y compuertas solo viene someramente detallados, necesitando algún trabajo adicional de cableado.
Las alas en este kit se han diseñado para poder ser movidas en su ángulo de incidencia de forma independiente tras finalizar el montaje, contando con tres posiciones de fijado, el gran inconveniente de este sistema es que no permite representar de forma extendida las superficies móviles del ala, como slats, flaps, que especialmente en este avión son muy vistosos cuando se encuentra en el momento del despegue o aterrizaje, con lo que si no queremos complicarnos con modificaciones, podemos representar el Tomcat estacionado en cubierta con su flecha alar máxima (alas retraídas) o en vuelo.
El resto de detalles del avión están suficientemente bien reproducidos, caso de las toberas, admisiones del motor, álabes de las turbinas y pilones de armamento, hay detalles que no se ven en otros kits, como la línea divisoria del radomo que permite diferenciar la zona de este que va en color fibra.
The piece trees come in the classic Academy light gray plastic, soft and grateful to file and work. The paneling is engraved and comes mostly riveted, although this riveting is not as rigorous in location and number as we see in the GWH or Finemolds models.
Before we mentioned that the trees and parts map of this kit is useful, and this is because surprisingly Academy has included parts to represent ANY VERSION OF F-14, this is significant especially with the lower price that this model has compared to its rivals like GWH, Hasegawa or Finemolds, so we found parts with the necessary alternatives to assemble each version, such is the case of the electronic pod under the nose, different in each variant; or the intake grids and protrusions in the area where the Vulcan cannon is housed, we even find two sets of vertical fins, for the F-14A/B and F-14D versions.
The landing gear components are well represented for the scale, although the shafts and his doors are only briefly detailed, requiring some additional wiring work.
The wings in this kit have been designed to be able to be moved in their angle of incidence independently after finishing the assembly, having three positions of fixation, the great disadvantage of this system is that it does not allow to represent in extended form the movable surfaces of the wing, like slats, flaps, that specially in this airplane are very striking when it is in the moment of the takeoff or landing, son that if we do not want to mess with modifications, we can represent the Tomcat parked in carrier deck with its wing arrow maximum (retracted wings) or in flight.
The rest of the details of the plane are sufficiently well reproduced, in the case of the nozzles, engine intakes, turbine blades and armament pylons, there are details that are not seen in other kits, such as the dividing line of the radome that allows to differentiate the area from this one that goes in fibre colour.
COCKPIT
Aquí es principalmente donde vemos que Academy ha incluido en este kit componentes para representar todas las versiones del Tomcat, contando con dos versiones de asientos, y dos de paneles diferentes para cada versión en piloto y RIO. El nivel de detalle en relieve en todas estas piezas es sorprendente para el coste de la maqueta, y con un poco de pericia se pueden lograr buenos resultados solo con pintura sin recurrir a calcas que, por cierto incluye en el kit de forma separada para las consolas y módulos de cada panel, lo cual es muy de agradecer.
Como apunte negativo señalamos la patente línea de molde que queda en la parte central exterior de la pieza principal de la carlinga, lo que nos obliga a lijar y pulir con la dificultad añadida de no rebajar en la tarea el montante que divide la zona de piloto y RIO.
This is mainly where we see that Academy has included in this kit components to represent all versions of the Tomcat, with two seat versions, and two different panel versions for each pilot and RIO version. The level of detail embossed on all these parts is amazing for the cost of the model, and with a little expertise you can achieve good results with just paint without using decals which, by the way, are included in the kit separately for the consoles and modules of each panel, which is very welcome.
As a negative point we point out the visible mold line that remains in the central exterior part of the main piece of the cockpit, which forces us to sand and polish with the added difficulty of not lowering the frame that divides the pilot and RIO area in the canopy.
ARMAMENTO / WEAPONRY
A diferencia de otros Tomcats que no traen armamento, como el de Finemolds, Academy si nos incluye una cantidad de armamento suficiente para representar las cargas más típicas de este caza, encontramos lo siguiente:
- 2x AIM-9D/G/H Sidewinder para representar alguna versión inicial de F-14A, se distinguen por sus aletas delanteras en flecha.
- 2x AIM-9L/M Sidewinder, modelo más moderno que sirvió hasta el fin del servicio del F-14, se distinguen por sus aletas delanteras en doble delta, más abiertas.
- 2x AIM-7E Sparrow para representar F-14 iniciales, se distinguen por su resalte mas corto.
- 2x AIM-7F/M Sparrow para F-14 mas recientes, con un resalte mas largo que llega casi hasta el radomo.
- 4x AIM-54A/C Phoenix
- 2 GBU-12 para equipar la versión polivalente F-14D
- Pod LANTIRN de designación de blancos para la variante F-14B y F-14D
- 2x Depósitos lanzables de 2000lbs del tipo definitivo para ubicar bajo las góndolas motrices.
Todos bien representados con buen nivel de detalle y calcas para facilitar su decoración.
Unlike other Tomcats that don’t carry weapons, such as the Finemolds, Academy´s one includes a sufficient amount of weaponry to represent the most typical payloads of this fighter, we find the following:
- 2x AIM-9D/G/H Sidewinder to represent some initial version of the F-14A, distinguished by their arrowed front wings.
- 2x AIM-9L/M Sidewinder, more modern model that served until the end of the service of the F-14, are distinguished by its double delta front wings, more open.
- 2x AIM-7E Sparrow to represent the initial F-14, are distinguished by their shorter protrusion.
- 2x AIM-7F/M Sparrow for newer F-14s, with a longer leading edge that reaches almost to the radome.
- 4x AIM-54A/C Phoenix
- 2 GBU-12 to equip the multi-purpose version F-14D
- LANTIRN target designation pod for F-14B and F-14D variant
- 2x 2000lbs drop tanks of the latest type to be placed under the engine nacelles.
All well represented with good level of detail and decals for easy decoration.
CONCLUSIÓN
Sorprender actualmente lanzando una nueva maqueta de F-14 1/72 es complicado con la competencia que hay, tenemos GWH, Hasegawa, Finemolds, Fujimi, Hobbyboss… pero Academy ha sabido buscar un consenso entre calidad y precio que le lleva a colocar este kit entre las maquetas más solicitadas de su género actualmente, todo ello unido a la posibilidad de poder usar este kit para hacer cualquier versión de F-14, hacen que se convierta en una de las opciones mas atractivas para el maquetista de la escala 1/72.

Actually launching a new model of F-14 1/72 is complicated with the competition that there is, we have GWH, Hasegawa, Finemolds, Fujimi, Hobbyboss … but Academy has managed to find a consensus between quality and price that leads to place this kit among the most requested models of its kind today, all this coupled with the possibility of using this kit to make any version of F-14, make it one of the most attractive options for the modeler of the 1/72 scale.
