HISTORIA
Los versátiles AV-8S Harrier (Matador) constituyeron la columna vertebral del Grupo Aeronaval de la Armada Española hasta la llegada de sus versiones modernizadas McDonnell-Douglas AV-8B Harrier II . Estos pequeños cazas, cuya característica principal fue la de ser el primer avión embarcado con despegue vertical, estaban capacitados para realizar misiones de defensa aérea, superioridad aérea y ataque a objetivos en superficie (navales o terrestres) gracias a sus altas prestaciones, con velocidades de 1.2 mach y una autonomía de 660 kilómetros transportando una carga de 1.360 kg.
The versatile AV-8S Harrier (Matador) formed the backbone of the Spanish Armada´s Naval Air Group until the arrival of their modernized McDonnell-Douglas AV-8B Harrier II versions. These small fighters, whose main characteristic was that of being the first vertical take-off airborne aircraft, were capable of performing air defense, air superiority and attacking surface targets (naval or land) thanks to their high performance, with speeds of Mach 1.2 and a range of 660 kilometers carrying a load of 1,360 kg.
LA MAQUETA
La compañía AMMO nos trae una edición especial del molde original del Harrier 1/48 de Kinetic introducido en 2014. En esta ocasión, el lanzamiento de AMMO ha sido casi paralelo al del AV-8A USMC de Kinetic, pero como veremos más adelante, estamos ante un kit muy completo. que no solo abarca al Matador AV-8S español, sino que permitirá asimismo representar versiones AV-8A del USMC y GR.1 de la RAF. El boxart tan atractivo es obra del ilustrador Valery Petelin, en el se puede ver un AV-8S de la 8ª Escuadrilla sobrevolando al antiguo portaaeronaves español “Dédalo”.
The AMMO company brings us a special edition of the original mold of Kinetic’s Harrier 1/48 introduced in 2014. This time, AMMO’s release has been almost parallel to Kinetic’s AV-8A USMC, but as we will see later, this is a very complete kit, which not only covers the Spanish Matador AV-8S, but will also allow to represent AV-8A versions of the USMC and RAF GR.1. The very attractive boxart is the work of illustrator Valery Petelin, showing an AV-8S of the “8ª Escuadrilla” flying over the former Spanish aircraft carrier “Dédalo”.
INSTRUCCIONES
Primer punto fuerte de la maqueta, las instrucciones consisten en un librillo a todo color en el que la primera impresión que uno se lleva es que AMMO ha puesto cariño en este kit, ya que antes de los pasos de montaje propiamente dichos, se introduce una breve reseña histórica, una entrevista a un Capitán de AV-8S español, un completo dossier fotográfico a color del “Matador” e incluso unos breves “tips” o consejos sobre técnicas de weathering, colocación de calcas o pintura, que vienen muy bien para empezar con ganas la maqueta. Los idiomas empleados para esta primera parte son el inglés y el español, mientras que los pasos de montaje se ven solo en inglés, estos se ven generalmente en perspectiva isométrica, y tienen en cuenta en todo momento las alternativas disponibles según la versión del Harrier que vamos a representar. Ojo a los códigos QR insertados que nos van a proporcionar valiosa información adicional sobre armamento y otros.
They are presented in a folio-sized booklet in English, Chinese and Japanese, containing a detailed sprues map, the steps are generally presented in isometric view and are clear and detailed. There are curious elements such as the possibility of adjusting the position of the tensioning wheel to give more or less tension to the tracks. It is a bit disappointing when we get to the assembly steps of the tower, we see that it does not include a piece that imitates the protective canvas dust cover of the mantlet, I imagine that they have not included it allowing mobility of the piece, so we will have to look for to some aftermarket or model it ourselves in putty. Watch out for the inserted QR codes that will provide us with valuable additional information about weaponry and others.
DECORACIONES DISPONIBLES
El kit ofrece cinco decoraciones distintas, para las que nos podemos guiar con láminas a todo color que, en el caso del Harrier español, incluyen un código QR para ampliar la información disponible. Las referencias de color que se proporcionan son de pinturas AMMO únicamente.

The kit offers five different decorations, for which we can be guided by full color plates that, in the case of the Spanish Harrier, include a QR code to expand the available information. The color references provided are from AMMO paints only.

PIEZAS DE PLÁSTICO
Las piezas principales se presentan en un plástico de color gris, panelado negativo sutil y correcto para la escala, remachado en su mayor parte y con un nivel de detalle mas que aceptable en todos los aspectos, interiores, tren de aterrizaje, fuselaje, etc. Las admisiones auxiliares del motor pueden ponerse abiertas o cerradas, las superficies móviles de las alas vienen separadas para poder colocarlas en el ángulo que deseemos, como detalle curioso, que ya viene dándose en anteriores kits de Kinetic, es que se incluyen dos juegos de alas, estabilizadores y deriva para hacer las distintas variantes del Harrier, (vemos incluso que se cuela en una de las grapas el radomo del Harrier FA.Mk.2), en el armamento tambien vemos una amplia variedad, detalle de Kinetic siempre, que excede incluso las posibilidades de los aparatos representados en la maqueta, tal es el caso de los misiles Sea Eagle o AMRAAM incluidos, no aptos para estos Harriers iniciales. Las piezas transparentes vienen muy bien reproducidas, incluyendo el cordón explosivo en el techo de la carlinga.
The main parts are presented in a gray plastic, subtle and correct negative paneling for scale, riveted for the most part and with a level of detail more than acceptable in all aspects, interiors, landing gear, fuselage, etc.. The auxiliary engine intakes can be put open or closed, the movable surfaces of the wings are separated allowing to place them at the angle we want, as a curious detail, which is already given in previous Kinetic kits, is that two sets of wings, stabilizers and drift are included to make the different variants of the Harrier, (we even see that sneaks into one of the trees the radome of the Harrier FA.Mk.2 ), in the armament we also see a wide variety, always a detail of Kinetic, which exceeds even the possibilities of the devices represented in the model, such is the case of the Sea Eagle or AMRAAM missiles included, not suitable for these initial Harriers. The transparent parts are very well reproduced, including the explosive cord on the canopy roof.
PARTES COMPLEMENTARIAS
Ya hemos comentado que la maqueta trae un buen nivel de detalle, pero como complemento adicional, se incluye una pequeña lámina de fotograbado sin pintar para detallar partes como los cinturones del asiento eyectable, separadores de lámina de aire en el borde de ataque alar, bordes de las luces de formación o refuerzos estructurales. Por otra parte, tenemos la hoja de calcas que lleva la firma Cartograf garantiza calidad para realizar las decoraciones que ofrece el kit, esta hoja es simplemente ENORME!, y se agradece que han tenido el detalle de incluir numerales para numerosos aparatos diferentes, de forma que no tengamos que comprar otras calcas para evitar hacer el mismo aparato que tu compañero de hobby.
We have already mentioned that the kit comes with a good level of detail, but as an additional complement, a small sheet of unpainted photoetched parts is included to detail parts such as the ejector seat belts, air foil separators on the wing leading edge, edges of the formation lights or structural reinforcements. On the other hand, we have the decal sheet that carries the signature Cartograf guarantees quality to make the decorations offered by the kit, this sheet is just HUGE, and we appreciate that they have had the detail to include numerals for many different aircrafts, so that we do not have to buy other decals to avoid making the same aircraft as your hobby partner.
CONCLUSIÓN
No solo nos encontramos ante la mejor maqueta para realizar un Harrier español “Matador”, sino que al ofrecerse decoraciones y partes extra para hacer otras versiones – incluido el muy diferente GR.3 británico – convierten a este kit en una pieza muy atractiva. Como recomendaciones señalamos que, para hacer la versión española, no debemos usar los misiles Sidewinder que trae la maqueta (de tipo AIM-9L), acertadamente indican en sus instrucciones de armamento (ver QR insertado) que solo se empleen sus raíles lanzadores o, como mucho, quitar las aletas a un AIM-9L para imitar un misil de prácticas. El Sidewinder que empleaban los Matador era el AIM-9P. En resumen, un kit en el que AMMO ha puesto especial cariño por ofrecer la maqueta que esperaban muchos modelistas y que se puede hacer prácticamente de caja.
Not only are we in front of the best model to build a Spanish Harrier “Matador”, but the extra parts and decorations offered to build other versions – including the very different British GR.3 – make this kit a very attractive piece. As recommendations we point out that, to make the Spanish version, we should not use the Sidewinder missiles that comes with the kit (AIM-9L type), rightly indicate in their armament instructions (see QR inserted) that only their launcher rails must be used or, at most, remove the fins to an AIM-9L to mimic a practice missile. The Sidewinder used by the Matadors was the AIM-9P.
In short, a kit in which AMMO has put special care to offer the model that many modelers expected and that can be made practically out of a box.
